Why moisture is a real material parameter
Two silica sand deliveries can show the same gross weight without providing exactly the same dry-material mass. Water directly affects conversion between wet mass and dry mass and, depending on the process, dosing, handling, storage or drying.
This is why moisture appears in our industrial silica sand guide. A percentage is useful only when the sample represents the lot, the method and calculation basis are defined and the result is linked to the industrial decision.
1. What is actually measured?
ASTM C566-25 addresses total evaporable moisture content of aggregate by drying: surface water and water in pores. Water chemically combined with minerals is not evaporable for this test. The moisture value must therefore always be associated with a method.
2. Gravimetric principle: weigh before and after drying
The principle is to collect a representative sample, determine wet mass, dry it according to the applicable procedure until the defined dry state or constant mass, then determine dry mass.
The WSDOT FOP for AASHTO T 255 describes this comparison. EN 1097-5:2008 defines a ventilated-oven reference method for aggregates. For some production controls, other methods may be used when an appropriate working relationship with the reference has been established.
A rapid reading and a reference value are therefore not automatically equivalent.
3. Wet basis and dry basis: never mix them
Let m_w be wet mass and m_d dry mass.
Wet basis: Moisture (%) = (m_w - m_d) / m_w × 100
Dry basis: Moisture (%) = (m_w - m_d) / m_d × 100
Both describe the same sample but are not numerically identical. The certificate or contract should state the convention.
4. Example: dry material in one wet tonne
Calculation example only, not a Minerallum specification: 1,000 kg at 5% wet-basis moisture gives:
1,000 × (1 - 0.05) = 950 kg dry material.
| Element | Mass |
|---|---|
| Wet mass | 1,000 kg |
| Calculated evaporable water | 50 kg |
| Calculated dry material | 950 kg |
The 5% figure is not a recommended limit.
5. Why moisture can change dosing
A mass feeder receiving wet sand measures solids plus water. If formulation is defined on dry material, moisture variation changes actual solid input for the same gross mass.
ASTM C566 cites adjustment of concrete batch quantities among common uses. Other industries should apply the principle according to their formulation and tolerances.
6. Moisture, storage and flow
Depending on grading, fines, storage and water level, moisture may contribute to agglomeration, adhesion, flow changes or dosing difficulties.
These effects do not define a universal limit. The correct criterion is moisture compatible with the process.
7. Moisture and industrial drying
When dry sand is required, received water must be removed. Higher moisture can increase water to evaporate and drying load.
No universal energy consumption follows from one percentage: it depends on dryer, throughput, temperature, air and thermal losses.
8. Sampling can dominate the error
ASTM C566 notes that moisture can be measured in a sample more reliably than that sample necessarily represents the supply.
A precise oven cannot correct poor sampling. Control should therefore be linked to representative silica sand sampling.
9. Preserve the sample
After sampling, an open container, excessive delay, sunlight, a wet surface or unsealed packaging can change measured water. The protocol should define identification, container and preservation.
10. Rapid methods: useful, but qualify them
A plant may use a rapid method for process control. It does not automatically become the contractual value.
EN 1097-5 allows other methods for some uses, particularly factory production control, when an appropriate working relationship with the reference method is established.
| Use | Approach |
|---|---|
| Reference / dispute | Contractual reference method |
| Lot release | Agreed method |
| Process control | Validated rapid method |
| Monitoring | Trend + periodic checks |
11. Moisture, absorption and surface water are not synonyms
Evaporable moisture may include surface water and pore water. Absorption is a different property defined by a specific method and reference state. Do not combine values from different methods without understanding their reference states.
12. What should lot control document?
A useful report may identify product, lot, date, sampling point and method, sample mass, moisture method, wet and dry masses, calculation convention, result, operator and acceptance decision.
13. The right receiving questions
Does the result match the lot? Where and when was it sampled? Which method? Wet or dry basis? How was it preserved? Which contractual tolerance applies? How is a rapid method checked?
For filtration projects, moisture also matters at receipt; see our silica sand filtration guide.
14. Comparing commercial offers
A price per tonne can mislead if moisture differs substantially while the process effectively purchases useful dry material.
Buyers can request mass convention, declared or guaranteed moisture, method, tolerance and the rule for exceedance. Wet sand is not automatically non-conforming: conformity depends on the contract.
15. There is no universal ideal moisture
The relevant limit depends on the process: already-wet system, dry-basis formulation, water-sensitive mixture, in-line drying, storage or packaging.
Minerallum therefore does not recommend one generic threshold. The specification should connect method, limit, frequency, sampling and decision to the actual process.
Key takeaway
Moisture links delivered mass to the dry material actually available and can affect dosing, handling, storage or drying.
A usable measurement requires a representative sample, a defined method and an explicit calculation convention. Wet basis and dry basis must never be confused.
